Annual RAG week taking place at Bracknell & Wokingham College

28 April 2017

Thomas Cardale - Head Shave

This week’s annual Raising and Giving Week (RAG Week) saw students and staff of Bracknell & Wokingham College raise a grand total of nearly £2,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. It was an extremely eventful, fun filled week of activities involving students and staff, all in the name of charity.

There were numerous challenges and events that took place this week, including: a sports relay, neck and shoulder massages from our beauty students, a balloon roulette which involved staff and students answering series of questions and forfeit balloons filled with something either wet or messy.

There was also a staff coffee morning where staff had baked cakes that our students judged on best looking and best tasting cake. There was a head-shaving event (Brave the Shave!) Two of our students decided to have their hair all shaved off to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Thomas Cardale set up his own “Just Giving Page” and has raised just over £700! Sean Brownlee also raised money for our chosen charity by taking part in this event and various other events throughout the week. A great effort from them both!

The popular dog show was another fantastic event, which was a staff event. Eight members of staff brought their dog in, and were judged on various criteria. Other events included: Bracknell and Wokingham Street collections, a fete with various stalls, which included: a lucky dip, ESOL food, cookie stall, an ice cream van, a fudge kitchen, tombola, doughnut eating, BBQ, live music from True Rumours, hand massages, splat the rat and chocolate hoopla. The fete was a huge success and it was great to see everyone getting involved.

Pie Face Challenge went down really well with our students, the lecturers could not say no for such a good cause. The principal also got involved with this event, showing what a good sport he is. There was also a bush tucker trial, an intense game of 5-aside football that our students took part in, displaying their skills with every player involved, enjoying the action.

We were grateful to receive donations from Boots and Pets at Home, who showed their support for the college’s fundraising efforts by donating prizes for events.

Deborah Wallace, Student Services Team Leader and one of RAG Week’s organisers, felt the week was a huge success:

“It was a great week and one that was enjoyed by both staff and students with something for everyone. It also gave the students the opportunity to see the staff getting involved with events encouraging the students to do the same.

“RAG Week not only raised money but also awareness for our chosen charity, Macmillan Cancer Support. It helps our students to develop key employability skills such as organisation skills and teamwork; experiences that they will be able take with them when they leave college.

“Student Services would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who contributed in any way to make RAG Week such a successful event.”
