Our Construction students visit new Fenwick store in Town Centre

Construction Students

The Construction department at the College were contacted by David Isherwood from the Simons Group recently. Simons are responsible for fitting out the new Fenwick store which is part of the regeneration of Bracknell town centre. One of Simons core values is to contribute positively to areas in which they work.

If you aren’t familiar with the regeneration project, the Fenwick store is near Millennium Way. In the daytime it is a large grey building that has thousands of holes in the facade. Behind each hole is a bulb that changes colour, making it the most striking landmark building that Bracknell has.

The Level 1 Construction students were excited to be invited into the Fenwick building to see how the Simons 15 million pound fit out contract was progressing. They were impressed with the finger print recognition system that the site operates to ensure that only authorised contractors are allowed in. One group have asked if the College could implement a system like this instead of access cards.

The students were interested to learn about the site recycling policy as it fits neatly into a Sustainability unit that the students will cover at Level 2. Currently, 90% of the Fenwick site waste is recycled. At present there are 80 people onsite but this could increase to approximately 200 as the project pace increases. Contractors that perform consistently well are used time and time again - a good incentive to do a great job.

The visit was over far too quickly. The students have already asked if they can go back to see the progress made in 3 months’ time. A big thank you to David Isherwood and the team for allowing us in.

The students were asked to complete various activities after the visit, all relating to the Construction industry and in particular the Fenwick site, which were sent across to David Isherwood.  As a reward for their efforts, David delivered an Amazon voucher for each student. A very thoughtful gift!

Simons have kindly said they will donate a sum of money to our Construction department with the stipulation that it is put towards something that will benefit both Construction students and Construction staff.
