Students join forces to find out about The Forces!

Foundation students and six Kennel Lane sixth formers had an action packed demonstration of some of the equipment and challenges they could face on the college’s Uniformed Public Services (UPS) course.

Daniel Bell, Study Support Assistant, organised the talk to the Foundation Students at the college’s Wick Hill Centre.

Daniel said:

“Three UPS students were able to come down with me to run it which was fantastic. This session was entirely based on the armed forces aspect of the course and was split into three sections, we started off with trying on a bit of uniform and other military related kit followed by a tasting of real MOD rations (soups and drinks) and finishing with a minefield game.

“The taster lesson was designed to show the students what we do on the UPS courses and to boost their confidence and skills a little bit. We are hoping to run further taster sessions in the future with other themes like the emergency services.

“This session proved very popular with the students and we have even been asked by representatives of Kennel Lane School that were present whether we could run something similar for them.”

The Foundation Students jumped at the chance to try out the kit and participate in the games but some weren’t so keen on the food.

Scott, one of the students present said:

“I liked all of it, apart from the soup, which was smelly. I wore an army suit. They put a blindfold on me and I walked through a minefield. I listened to my partners instructions to get through safely.”

Dean, another participant said:

“I thought it was a great team building exercise when we had to give instructions to a blind folded person.”

Daniel hopes to bring the students over to the main Church Road site in future to demonstrate some of the things that they were unable to take to Wick Hill, including a rapid response vehicle with lights and sirens.
