College salon helps ex-students show employers they are serious

Harmony Plus Hair Salon, a professional graduate salon opened by the college in September last year to help ex-Hairdressing students gain real work experience, has proven its worth with a number of its volunteers leaving for positions in local salons.

The salon’s manager, Tracey Martin, said of Harmony Plus:

“The idea came from several ex-students who needed a space where they could continue perfecting their skills while they looked for permanent work or started their own businesses.

“The styling is done by students who have completed their Level 3 Hairdressing qualification; who’ve come back - volunteering their time - so they can gain more experience, improve their technique and generally keep their hand in.”

Charlotte Wyatt, 20, from Winkfield, is one such ex-student who successfully got a new job at a hair salon after volunteering at the college’s professional salon.

Charlotte graduated from the college’s Level 3 Hairdressing course in June 2014 and returned to volunteer part-time in the Harmony Plus salon when finding a hairdressing position became difficult:

“Volunteering in the salon helped me to prove to potential employers my seriousness in becoming a hairdresser. I gained more confidence through volunteering at the salon and now find it a lot easier to chat to clients while cutting their hair. It gave me real experience in a working salon and the confidence to apply for jobs.

“Since volunteering at Harmony Plus I’ve managed to get a job as a Junior Stylist at Hair Tech in Windsor where I’ve been working part-time for 5 months. Harmony Plus has definitely helped me and I would advise the current students to consider it too when they finish their courses.”

Tracey Martin, added:

“The Harmony Plus salon gives our ex-students the opportunity to practise and hone their skills in hairdressing so they aren’t lost whilst they are looking for a more permanent position.”
