Harmony Plus hair salon launch – the highlights!

Harmony Plus Launch
Bracknell & Wokingham College celebrated the official opening of its new graduate hair salon ‘Harmony Plus’ on Friday afternoon.

Harmony Plus is a newly opened hair salon at the college’s main Church Road Centre.

The idea came from several ex-students who needed a space in which to continue perfecting their skills. The college set up the new salon to provide ex and qualified students the opportunity to gain real work experience within a working salon.

Guests were invited to find out more about the business, enjoy refreshments and book appointments at discounted prices. Tracey Martin, Harmony Plus Manager and organiser of the event, was thrilled with the turn out:

“We’ve taken lots of bookings already and everybody seems to be having a great time. We wanted to do this event to invite people in so they can find out what it’s all about.

“The styling is done by students who have completed their Level 3 Hairdressing qualification; who have come back - volunteering their time - so they can gain more experience, improve their technique and generally keep their hand in whilst they may be looking for permanent work within a salon or starting their own businesses.”

Charlotte Bailey, 19 and from Bracknell, a volunteer hair stylist for Harmony Plus and one of the ex-students who advised the idea to college decision makers, said:

“This is a really exciting project to be a part of. The salon is giving us practical experience on a more independent basis which means we can include what we do here on our CVs as real work experience, which will obviously help us in looking for permanent work.”

Jacqui Vaughan, 49 and from Bracknell, is a regular Harmony salon user and was intrigued to see what the new Harmony Plus salon had to offer:

“The opening hours for the salon are a massive plus for me as they include evenings and Saturdays meaning that I can fit appointments around my job rather than having to take time off, which is very convenient.

“The salon itself I think is a great idea and shows how much the college cares about its previous students. There are so many hairdressers out there that can’t get jobs due to a lack of experience and this is one solution for helping some of those to gain a better chance for themselves.”
