Work experience at college

Work experience
Last week our students along with some students from schools in the local area found out about a real working environment during work experience placements at the college and other local businesses.

Students take part in this week either as an essential part of their course, or simply to gain hands-on experience of a specific department. They get a real understanding of what a working environment is really like.

Over 300 students took part in work experience placements, with over 150 employers offering placements. Most students go out to external employers; however some of the students stay in the college to complete their work experience week. The college also offers placements to students from local schools including The Holt in Wokingham.

Jane Stoneham, Administration Assistant responsible for organizing the work experience scheme, believes that it is an incredibly beneficial opportunity for the students:

“Work experience can really help students to get a better understanding of their career path or just as a general eye opener into the world of work and its expectations. As well as this, it can go on UCAS forms and CVs and even mentioned at university interviews as valuable firsthand experience in their subject.”

One of the college’s Business students completing their work experience week in the college was Lauren Standern, who worked in the Human Resources (HR) department.

“I’ve been in HR this week, working on spreadsheets, filing, paperwork and generally helping out the staff. I really like it because I want to go on to study HR at university, and this week has really confirmed that I enjoy it and made the right decision to study it further.

“I definitely think that I’ve benefited from the week as it helped me to get an insight into working in the career I want to do in the future.”

The college also provides work experience opportunities for external students such as Katie Pinnell from The Holt School who spent the week working in the Marketing Department.

“I’ve been with marketing for my work experience and I’ve really enjoyed the week because I had never experienced a working environment before and I feel much more independent and have learned a lot too.”

Saskia Larsen, Human Resources and Development Manager at the college said:

“I find that work experience is very beneficial to both the department and the student, especially if the student is eager and committed to the work.
We often have business students do their work experience in HR because the work is relevant to what they are learning on their course.

“I think that work experience is a very good scheme as it makes students work ready, as the world of work is very different to the environment of school or college and it is good preparation for their future.”
