University becomes a reality for students

08 October 2014

Construction students from the college were recently reminded that progression on to university education is a possibility for them when they paid a visit to the School of Construction Management and Engineering at the University of Reading.

This reminder comes at an important time for students as the UCAS deadline to apply for the majority of university courses is at 6pm on Wednesday 15 January. The college is currently working with students to ensure they get their application forms submitted on time.

During the visit the students were given a tour and heard talks by Dr Tabarak Ballal and Dr Carol Jewell, from the university’s School of Construction Management and Engineering. This gave information on the courses available and the grades they would require to secure a place on them.

The students also heard from current undergraduates at the university, including former college construction students Shaun Nile and Stephanie Schippers, who came in during their Christmas break to give a valuable insight into the University of Reading experience.

Student Francis Fisher said:

“Looking around the facilities they have to offer, it motivated me massively to know that when I complete my course I have the potential to go to such a great university.

Prior to the trip I lacked the self-confidence and understanding of whether or not I would be able to go to university, but after the trip I found myself much more motivated when I saw what I could one day potentially have.”

Student Jay Tutton added:

“Our visit to Reading University was a fantastic opportunity to get an insight into the work and life of a university student. It was also a fantastic chance to speak to a lecturer at the university who was able to answer all of our questions.

I was particularly pleased when Dr Tabarak the director of undergraduate programmes, assured me that my grades and experience would be suitable for their university, an issue I have been worried about. This visit has given me the confidence to apply for one of the architectural courses once I have finished my current Level 3 construction course.”

Construction tutor Philip Jewell was delighted at the impact the trip had on his students:

“It has shown the students that progression to university is a possibility for them and not just an opportunity for ‘others’.  Our alumni students being able to come along and talk about their experiences helped to reinforce this view.

It will undoubtedly help to motivate our students to achieve their potential and reassess their career possibilities”.
