Sweeney Plod The Folly Barber

08 October 2014

Ex-Police Officer turned cut-throat barber, Dave Kerrigan, joined our Barbering students to demonstrate the art of the close-shave.

Our Principal, Campbell Christie CBE, is a regular to Sweeney Plod - The Folly Barber salon in Petersfield, and persuaded Dave, the proprietor of the salon, to come in and show our students how it should be done.

Although it does not form part of their qualification, the barbering tutors have been teaching this in-vogue treatment to the students to improve their employability skills.

Jane Lovejoy Tippet, Barbering Lecturer, said:

“Cut-throat barbering is an increasingly popular treatment in men’s grooming. We feel it’s important that we introduce our students to up and coming trends - encouraging them to do further courses, so they can add further skills into their professional portfolio for the future.

“We’ve shown them various videos of the treatment on YouTube but we have been lucky enough to have Dave come in and demonstrate the cut-throat shave. This way they can get a really close-up look and talk with someone who does it for a living.”

Andy Bignell, the model for the treatment, enjoyed the sensation:

“I usually just trim my beard with clippers so it was good to try something different. It was much more relaxing than I thought it would be, even with a crowd around me watching, and I would consider treating myself to a cut-throat shave again in the future.”

Katie Parfitt, Level 2 Barbering student, attended the session:

“I thought this was really interesting and a lot more educational than watching a video of it. I now have a much better understanding of the treatment and the history behind it, and I feel it has given me a good starting point to go on and learn more.”

Dave wanted to demonstrate a close-shave to help give the students a head start into its rising popularity:

“I’ve only been doing this professionally since 2011, after a 30 year career in the police force, and I personally have seen a big increase in the number of people asking for this - in that short time. I wanted to come here and help spread the word about more traditional treatments and the experiences that customers are currently looking for.”
