Students impress employers!

08 October 2014

Work placements are a valuable part of the college experience. And for three of Bracknell & Wokingham College’s Level 3 Travel & Tourism students, it brought more than just a glimpse into the world of work.

Impressing their employers during their placements, the students were all offered full-time jobs for once they’d finished college.

Nick Parry, Manager of the Holiday Inn, Winnersh, observed student Megan Chan putting her silver-service training to good use as she went about serving customers on her very first day. What Megan didn’t realise was that one of the guests was the hotel owner, who was so impressed that he offered her a job on the spot.

Nick Parry said:

“We were delighted to work with Bracknell & Wokingham College and it was refreshing to have a placement student who was work ready, and understood the qualities and detail required to work in the hotel industry.”

Jake Wright’s initial nervousness didn’t stop him from demonstrating his skills during his work experience at the Coppid Beech Hotel; and was offered two different jobs.

General Manager at the Coppid Beech Hotel, Daniel Lawrence, said:

“It’s nice to see young talent coming in to our industry who are keen to learn how we go about our daily jobs. Jake’s enthusiasm and the ability he showed, is a testament to the College and his family. Before he had even finished his placement, we offered Jake work, outside of his college hours, as we could see he would be an asset to our team and the hotel.”

Student Emily Ripley, completed her work experience at The Dorchester in London where she spent two weeks working with the Special Visits team within the hotel.

Head of Guest Services, Emily Freeman, said:

“Throughout this time Emily was very reliable, proactive and adaptable.  She very quickly took on tasks and was always willing to assume more responsibilities.”

Travel & Tourism lecturer, Dawn Annets, said of the three:

“I am very proud of all of the students who represent the college during their work placements; and these three, in particular, have shown what exemplary students we have at Bracknell & Wokingham College.

“This shows that the skills our students are learning within college, are making them ready for employment and helping to get them on the career ladder. Well done to Jake, Megan and Emily and we wish them luck.”
