Record breaking university applications

08 October 2014

The college has been celebrating a record breaking year for students applying to universityin 2014/15. This year 249 students studying A Levels, BTECs and Access to Higher Education courses at the college submitted applications, up from 214 in 2013.

Many students have already received offers from prestigious institutions across the UK including Aberdeen, Bath, Cardiff, Leeds, Reading, Royal Holloway, and Southampton.

Two of our students have received offers which are a first for the college. Health & Social Care student Emily Sharman has been offered a highly competitive place on a Midwifery course at the University of the West of England (UWE), and A Level student Hayley Wighton has received an offer to study Bioveterinary Sciences at the Royal Veterinary College.

Emily was delighted with her offer:

“I had a real sense of achievement when I received my offer from UWE. College has really helped because as well as offering the chance to study units relevant to midwifery I have also had the opportunity to gain lots of practical experience on work placements, including a week working in a local maternity ward.”

Nikki Perry, an Access to Psychology student, was also delighted to receive offers to study Psychology at her first choice university, Plymouth, amongst others:

“I was very excited, it was like a symbol of things to come! It was also very scary as I've lived in Bracknell my whole life. Now that I've received offers I am definitely more determined to get good grades.”

“Before my access course I was working as a Support Work for vulnerable adults. It was fascinating, but it made me realise I was doing the wrong thing and I wanted to look more into the theories behind the treatments."

The college work closely with the students and parents to provide information about the UCAS application to university process and about university life in general. Students are also able to attend one-to-one advice sessions and a number of visits to local universities are offered throughout the year.

A Level student Barnaby Smith received offers to study Chemistry at Bath, Loughborough and York and recognised the help the college had offered:

“The college helped me a lot. The tutors answer any questions you have, there are dedicated staff who know all there is to know about UCAS, and there are workshops to help with the personal statement, which I found really useful."

Karen Gallagher, Careers Advisor at the college said:

“Gaining a place on the course you want at one of your chosen universities is more competitive than ever and it is wonderful to see so many of our students receiving offers from such prestigious universities."
