Construction students learn importance of sustainability

08 October 2014

Our Construction students recently paid an interesting and informative visit to the Ecobuild exhibition at ExCel in London. The visit gave the students the opportunity to see the latest insustainable construction products and to gain a wider understanding of the importance of these products being more eco-friendly.

The students visited a large number of exhibitors who answered their questions and demonstrated products including insulation materials, photo voltaic panels and rainwater harvesting systems. They also sat in on a seminar with the presenter of Grand Designs, Kevin McCloud, who spoke about some of the finer details surrounding eco-friendly construction, including  applying for building permission.

The exhibition made a real impression on the students’ view of the construction industry and it’s moves towards sustainability.

Student Rob Dew, 18 from Reading, said:

“The trip to Eco-Build gave me a real insight into the construction industry. We talked to many professionals about all aspects of construction, from initial design to the final installation. Sustainability was a big issue at the event and the exhibitors were happy to help and gave us lots of information that will aid us in our ‘Sustainability’ college work.”

Jay Tutton, 19, from Bracknell added:

“Our trip to Eco Build was a fantastic chance to be surrounded by pioneers within the construction industry who were demonstrating the very latest in home construction and installation technology, this was an invaluable trip and I am grateful for the opportunity to attend such an event.”

Construction tutor, Philip Jewell was delighted with the impact the trip had on the students:

“This is an excellent exhibition which enhances the students’ learning by providing an up-to-date technological resource which complements their assignment and coursework.”
