College helps parents communicate with their hearing impaired children

08 October 2014

A group of parents of children with hearing impairments have been learning British Sign Language (BSL) at Bracknell & Wokingham College to help them communicate with their children and their friends.

BSL is the most common form of Sign Language in Britain and the college offers half day introductory courses and Level 1 and 2 certificates through Signature, the leading awarding body for qualifications in Deaf and Deaf blind communication.

The group is part of Reading Deaf Children’s Society (RDCS) and the Berkshire Sensory Consortium Service (SCS) group ‘Chatty Monkeys’. Both support people with hearing impairments and their families. It was here the group heard about the BSL courses at the college and decided to attend.

Paul Storey from the group explained why he decided to attend the BSL class:

“I have a deaf son. During his life he will come into contact with and make friends with other deaf people. I feel it is only right to learn the basics to help him and be able to communicate with his friends myself.

It has been an informative and fun experience and I have enjoyed meeting new people, learning a new skill and seeing myself and others develop over the course.”

Paul’s wife Jude also highlighted how much the course had helped her family:

“We did an Introduction to BSL and enjoyed it so decided to move on to the Level 1 course. It has enabled us to help increase my son’s BSL vocabulary and improve his speech. It has also helped him to be able to communicate with us better.”

Another member of the group, Michaela Thomas, also spoke of the benefits the course has had for her:

“My daughter does not sign but she has shown an interest in simple, everyday signs and this has been useful when she is without her hearing aids. It has also given me more confidence in general and I have been able to have simple conversations with my daughter’s deaf friends and other deaf people.

"Our tutor, Fliss Becker, has been very good at explaining things clearly and the course has been better than expected. If you are thinking of learning BSL at Bracknell & Wokingham College just go for it – if I can do it anyone can.”
