Berkshire Carers Day Off

08 October 2014

Carers from Berkshire were treated to a session of pampering and refreshments at our Harmony salon, giving them a well-deserved break from their caring responsibilities.

Manicures and Indian Head massages from our Beauty Therapy Level 2 and 3 students, were on offer to members of the Berkshire Carers Service (BCS).

BCS provides information, advice and support for unpaid carers. Kerry Singer, Project Officer at BCS contacted the college to arrange an event that would offer the Carers respite and recuperation. After the session she said:

“The Carers who attended the event all fed back that the treatments they received were wonderful and they left feeling very relaxed and pampered. They also commented on how lovely the students were and made them feel very welcome.”

Carly John, Beauty Lecturer at the college, helped arrange the day’s event with BCS: “Beauty Therapy is about more than just cosmetics. It is about restoring a person’s well-being and the benefits that treatments can have on the mind, body and soul.

“We wanted to arrange relaxing and unobtrusive treatments that anyone could enjoy, and to encourage the Carers in meeting others like them - whilst having refreshments.”

Carly also stated how valuable these experiences were for the students too, she continued: “Not only is it good practice for the students to be involved in a busy salon, but it also raises a certain level of awareness for them. They get to meet new types of people with different circumstances and they can really see how the treatments - and the qualifications they are working towards - can help their local community.”

Beauty student Sophie Reeves, welcomed having the clients visit their salon:

“These people obviously work very hard for someone else every single day, and we wanted to give them a day off for themselves to hopefully make them feel pampered and refreshed.

“It helps us to get to know different sorts of people but it’s also nice for us to feel like we’re doing something good for people who really deserve it.”

Carer Bharti Thakar, attended the pampering session from Lower Earley: “I have loved it. It has been nice to come and meet some new people and have some treatments. The service has been great from the students and I will definitely be coming here again for some more pampering.”
