Basketball - an underdog story

08 October 2014

Our college basketball team are showing they are serious in their pursuit of competition glory after they reached the final of the Berkshire Schools Under 19s Basketball Tournament.

Dan Sinclair, Sport student, took over the coaching of the team in September:

“We now have a scheduled three hour practice every Tuesday with proper basketball training and a brand new kit that was kindly paid for by the Student Association.”

Dan has played in the national basketball league for three years. He’s taking time out due to injury and was asked to take over the running of the college team using his experience and expertise:

“We have players from all across the college in our team. We have students studying A Levels, Engineering, Sport, Music, Media, Uniformed Public Services, all over - a good mix of players. Our training includes a one hour development session and then a team development session where we do drills, sets, offensive sets, defensive sets and general team work.”

A Level student Joseph Adegbile, is part of the basketball team: “I’ve been playing for a couple of months now and I’m really enjoying it. My shooting has got a lot better through Dan’s coaching, and my vertical jumps have increased too. Dan works us really hard in our training. He puts us through a lot of drills and there’s no messing about, which is good for team-discipline and self-discipline.”

The team has secured their place in the final with a dramatic semi-final comeback win against The Forest School. The team trailed 15-5 at half time but a rousing speech from the coach and an inspirational performance from the mascot sparked a fight-back. The team seized victory, winning 35-32, taking them through to the finals.

Dan Sinclair, said of the team: “They’ve come a long way from their once a month sessions. We’re a pretty organised team. We’ve got a real competitive edge now and are able to compete against other teams in the league and win matches. We’re already working and developing towards next season’s games and are hoping to get to the championships next year.”
