Visitors race to lecture

06 October 2014

Bracknell & Wokingham College joined with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Imperial Racing Green this week to offer the second Bracknell Easter LectureRacing Green Endurance – Electric cars come of age.

An audience of around 150 heard from Racing Green Endurance’s Alex Schey and Toby Schulz about how they worked closely with Radical Sportscars to produce the stunning SRZero electric sports car from August 2009 to July 2010.

The SRZero is a 400 bhp car, weighing in at just over a tonne with a top speed of 200 km/h that does 0-100 km/h in 7 seconds and only costs one penny a mile to run. This in itself was a magnificent feat of engineering, but not content with sitting back and admiring their handiwork, the team then took the car out for a spin.

Not only did they successfully travel the full 26,000 km. length of the Pan-American Highway, they touched the hearts of many people on the way. They proved beyond doubt that electric cars can be sustainable, whilst educating and inspiring the next generation of budding scientists and engineers.

Alex was delighted with how the evening went:

"It was a real pleasure to address a large and varied audience at Bracknell and Wokingham College and to tell them of our exciting quest to inspire the younger generation to take up science and engineering.

“Furthermore, I was impressed to see how the can-do work hard spirit that saw us succeed is exactly the qualities that the College instils into their students, and I think they're doing a fantastic job at that."

Stephen King, Head of Faculty for 14-19 Programmes for the college was also pleased with the outcome:

“The lecture was well attended and was a very informative and entertaining evening. The two speakers gave a clear view on the development of electric vehicles for the future use of domestic consumers.”

Bracknell & Wokingham College offer courses in the sciences and engineering. If you would like more information or to sign up for one of these courses visit or call 0845 3303343.
