UCU Strike Action Statement

06 October 2014

Bracknell & Wokingham College will be open for students on Thursday 24 March 2011 despite strike action by the University and College Union (UCU).

College Principal Howard O’Keeffe said:

“It will be business as usual for students at Bracknell & Wokingham College this week despite strike action on Thursday by the University and College Union (UCU). The college will be open as normal and all scheduled examinations will take place. We will inform students of their individual timetables on the day.

“We recognise that this strike is in reaction to the erosion of pay and conditions by national government. We would like to see all college staff properly rewarded for their valuable work, but cuts to college funding in the current tough economic environment make this a challenge.”

The local branch of UCU has stressed that they do not want to disrupt their students’ learning; their spokesperson said:

“Members here have no issue with Bracknell & Wokingham College decisions, where we have accepted a freeze on pay both this year and last. Staff who are not members of UCU will be able to go freely to and from work without hassle. There will be a ‘peaceful picket’ outside college premises where people will be able to discuss how they feel about these national issues if they wish to.”
