Nepalese New Year comes to Bracknell & Wokingham

06 October 2014

Bracknell and Wokingham College Principal and Chief Executive Campbell Christie and the college’s Head of ESOL, Languages and Study Support, Saul Pope were invited to the local Nepalese community’s 2070 New Year celebrations recently.

Campbell Christie attended a celebration in Owlsmoor, whilst Saul Pope, attended a celebration at Arborfield Army Garrison. Both watched dance displays and sampled food cooked mainly by the party goers.

In Nepal they use the Vikram Samvat calender established by an Indian Emperor using lunar months, which is approximately 56 years and 8 and a half months ahead of our own which is why they were celebrating New Year 2070.

Campbell Christie said:

“These events offered a great opportunity to discover more about the Nepalese culture, both in the wider world and in the local area. They also offered the opportunity to learn about the successes of Nepalese people in the local area.

“I met a retired Ghurkha captain who has set up his own IT company, and a taxi driver whose daughter has just graduated from university with a first class honours degree.”

The college has had Nepali students on full-time courses, including Health & Social Care, Uniformed Public Services and Access to Higher Education, and on part-time courses for adults including English and Workforce Skills. Reflecting on this relationship Campbell Christie said:

“It’s clear that a strong relationship is developing between the college and local Nepalis – one that has been helped greatly by partnership work with local councils. It’s a relationship the college can develop even further.”

Bracknell & Wokingham College is in the heart of its community offering courses to all local communities. To find out more visit or call 0845 330 3343.
