Managing a degree and a baby

06 October 2014

For some, doing a Foundation Degree in Management and working is enough of a challenge but what happens when you throw giving birth into that mix too? This was what happened when one student was studying for her Foundation degree in Management at Bracknell & Wokingham College.

Kay Cooper gave birth to baby James in December 2008. Kay may have had herhands full in more ways than one but she didn’t let that affect her studies:

“During this course I have had a baby. This has clearly been a life-changing experience. However, my marks have not dropped and I have continued to thoroughly enjoy the course. I have had a huge amount of support from the staff, who have been amazing and I was very lucky to be part of such a supportive class. The camaraderie was fantastic.”

And Kay wasn’t the only one going through a life-changing time, Sadhna Patel said:

“I have enjoyed the last two years of my Foundation degree in Management. The tutors have been supportive and the team great. The assignments have been hard work, fitting in work and family life. It was stressful at times but I always looked forward to attending college. I have seen a change in my attitude to learning and my personal development.”

Course manager, Susan Thomas is enthusiastic about the course and what it can do for students, she said:

“I have seen my students develop both professionally and personally through this course. It’s the perfect way to progress in your career without having to give up work – the course is designed to meet the demands of people who are working.

“We take into account not only your academic qualifications but also your previous knowledge and life experiences, both inside and outside work. It means a lot of hard work but huge and lasting rewards!
