HR student wins CIPD award

06 October 2014

A college student has won a CIPD Student Award for the best examination performancein Leadership and Management.

Simon Gosling, a Human Resources manager from Farnborough, collects the accolade this month at the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) Annual Conference and Exhibition in Manchester.

“I’m extremely surprised!" he said. "It’s very unexpected; I thought it was a joke at first!”

Simon earned the award after the first year of his Leadership and Management course, part of the CIPD’s Professional Development Scheme.

“After 20 years in the IT industry I decided to swap to HR three years ago, and I wanted to formalise that choice with a qualification.

“It’s a lot to take on; up to 18 hours a week of work; but my tutors were really good and I got steadily better at organising myself.

Mr Gosling will get his award in the plush Rolls Suite of Manchester’s Midland Hotel, but he also takes a big steptowards his eventual ambition to be a HR Director.

“The course has helped me build the platform to launch my career. It gives you real tools for real problems; it’smore than just a ticked box for my CV."

Peter Herman, CIPD Manager, National Assessment explained why Simon had got the prize.

“Chartered membership of the CIPD is highly sought after by employers and each year approximately 3,000 candidates progress towards this aim by taking examinations for the CIPD’s postgraduate-level Professional Development Scheme. Simon achievedoutstanding results in all of his examinations and is a worthy winner.”

The news also excited Linda Stannett, our Senior Lecturer in Human Resources.

“I’m absolutely thrilled for Simon", she said. "With all the effort he’s put into his work, it’s great to see a very deserving winner receive such a prestigious prize.

“He’s been a real pleasure to teach and I hope he keeps getting great results throughout the rest of his qualification.”
