Higher Education Conference

06 October 2014

Over 100 students from Bracknell & Wokingham College attended the College’s annual Higher Education Conference.

The conference is designed to give current students who will start university in 2012 an insight into the UCAS system, online applications, personal statements and student finance. It also gives students a chance to hear a current undergraduate’s view on life at University.

Georgia Stevens, a 19 year old A Level student from Wokingham said: “Today has been really educational for me. I wanted to find out more about applying to university and what grades I might need to fulfil my ambition of becoming a primary school teacher.”

Students are supported with their university applications by their Personal Tutors; and the Student Services team also offer a wide range of resources to help with the selection of courses and universities.

Brian Uzzell, direct of Student Services said: “Today is all about opening the students’ eyes to higher education, encouraging them to consider it as an option. Last year we had 219 students apply for university and we hope to get a similar number this year because it is worth it in the long run, even with the increased tuition fees.”

Students heard from College advisers and Student Services, as well as speakers from Oxford Brookes University, Reading University and Aimhigher about what to expect from life at university.

Lucinda Morton, College Liaison Adviser from Oxford Brookes University said: “Today is about giving the students a brief introduction to the process of applying to university so they can make an informed decision about their future. Time management is so important and starting your application as early as possible will give you a greater chance of securing a place at your preferred university.”

As well as the Higher Education Conference for Students, the college has also planned an information evening for parents, as well as Open Day visits to universities including Portsmouth, St. Marys, Oxbridge and a UCAS Conference at Reading University where 120 Universities from around the country will be represented.
