Hairdressing competition

06 October 2014

Our Hair & beauty students traded classes for catwalks last week as part of their Level 3 NVQ.

Students were set the task of producing an eye-catching new look. They had to research their theme over eight weeks and create a hairstyle, with costume, in our new Harmony salon.

Each designer and their model emerged from the hairspray onto the catwalk in front of friends, family and a panel of judges including Carey Faulkner, a Consultant from one of the salon’s sponsors, Paul Mitchell®.

The winner was Heather Stroud, from Wokingham, who brightened the room with her ‘lightning’ ensemble and took home an armful of Paul Mitchell® goodies.

“I’m totally shocked to have won! The look I chose was a challenge as I usually avoid doing hair-ups, and I made a load of last-minute changes to the hairstyle as well. So it’s a surprise and it’s really boosted my confidence.”

Heather won with the help of her model Kim, and two of the college’s first year Beauty NVQ Level 2 students who did Kim’s make-up.

“I found coming back to college quite daunting at first, especially after many years of working in hairdressing, but now I think the NVQ has helped to dust off the cobwebs and will give me many more employment options when I finish in June”.

 Carey Faulkner said:

“It’s been great to see how well the students are doing in the new salon.

Congratulations to all the entrants; it was a very tough decision but somebody had to win. We just felt the ‘lightning’ look ticked all the right boxes for the assessment.

“We at Paul Mitchell® pride ourselves on working with professional colleges, and with Bracknell & Wokingham College’s hairdressing team we have an ambitious and exciting new relationship."
