Former student returns as part of IBM careers talk

06 October 2014

IT giant IBM came to the college last week to talk to our Year 1 and 2 IT students about what employers are looking for, CV writing and Apprenticeships with IBM.

Suzanna Jones, IBM Foundation Business Operations Manager, delivered the talk alongside one of our former IT students Jonathan Haines who joined the IBM Apprenticeship team in July. Jonathan gained a triple distinction on his BTEC Level 3 Diploma in IT and also received a college Achiever Award at this year’s ceremony. His former tutors were delighted to welcome him back and Karen de Fraine, Senior Computing & IT lecturer, said:

“It was a very interesting talk and it was great to see Jonathan back.  Jonathan was always a quietly determined and self-motivated student who set himself high targets so it’s great to see him doing so well. His success is an example of what can be achieved if you are prepared to work hard and take a conscientious approach to your studies.”

Jonathan is certainly enthused by his new role and said of his decision to join IBM:

“It’s been fantastic and I certainly have no regrets about my decision to accept an Apprenticeship with IBM. It has been hard work but at the same time it has been very exciting and I am learning a lot and meeting a lot of new people. I really wanted to be able to do something which enabled me to go straight into my chosen industry and this Apprenticeship has allowed me to do that.”

He also believes that the work he completed at college gave him the skills and confidence to succeed in his new role:

“Completing a vocational course at college really set me up well for my role at IBM. It helped me to appreciate how to manage my workload and that you have to work hard and be proactive to get where you want to be.  The skills I learned on the course have also been very transferable to the work I am doing at IBM, particularly the work we did on client focus which is very important. The presentation skills I learned at college have also been very useful.

College definitely helped to give me independence and feel confident enough to take on an Apprenticeship and work for a company as large as IBM. It also taught me that if you are prepared to work hard at college it can lead to other exciting opportunities and this was a natural progression for me.”

Suzanna Jones was delighted with how the talk went and with the relationship between the college and IBM:

"We really enjoy coming to present at Bracknell college; the enthusiasm in the room is brilliant! After my last visit to the college, I was delighted to find out that one of the students in the room applied to the IBM Apprentice scheme, was offered a role and has started on the programme. It's great that IBM and Bracknell College can work together like this and I am really looking forward to coming back again in the New Year."
