County Cup champions

06 October 2014

Bracknell & Wokingham College FC lifted their first piece of silverware of the year with a 1-0 win against a strong Reading Blue Coat side in the County Cup final.

31 teams had entered the trophy, and the victory buried the memories of a disappointing result in the East Berkshire Cup Final at the hands of The Piggott School two weeks previous.

Man of the match Matt Leigh was a constant pest on the left, and Bracknell duly took the lead after 40 minutes having enjoyed the better of the first-half chances.

Blue Coat could only deflect Leigh’s free kick from the left and Josh Smith popped up at the back post to smashin a first-time volley.

A scrappier second half allowed Blue Coat more possession and they played themselves back into the contest.

In the last five minutes Blue Coatpeppered the Bracknell goal forcing keeper Jack Medhurst to make some fantastic saves. The resistance held firm, and the final whistle confirmed Bracknell & Wokingham College as deserving County Champions.

Stuart Carrington, Sport Lecturer, said:

“It was a magnificent team performance with everyone playing brilliantly. The shape, organisation and positivity was great to watch and our lads definitely deserved to bring the cup home.

“I would like to wish departees Josh Smith, Stefan Blunden, Chris Burden and top-scorerSimon Lacey all the best for next year, and a special mention to Captain Scott Whiting who will also be leaving us.”
