Council meets apprentices

06 October 2014

During Apprenticeship Week, Victor Nicholls, Assistant Chief Executive of Bracknell Forest Council, spent the day with Bracknell & Wokingham College apprentices in their workplace. Four accountancy apprentices, currently working at Knowledgepool in Bracknell, showed Victor what a typical day involves and why they think other businesses should take on apprentices.

Knowledgepool, Britain’s biggest buyer of learning and development, employs four accountancy apprentices who are all studying at Bracknell & Wokingham College. James Cotton, Finance Manager, said: “Ideally we’d like to take on more apprentices next year in accountancy and in other areas of the business, like Customer Services, because they provide the skills a growing business, like us, needs in the future.”

Victor Nicholls, Assistant Chief Executive of Bracknell Forest Council said: “I’ve found today really interesting and through the work of the Bracknell Forest Economic Development Strategy I want to raise awareness of the incredible opportunities for young people on these Apprenticeship schemes – they’ll get the experience, skills and valuable qualifications they need.  The Borough Council is committed to do everything it can to help young people into work, and as a key partner of Bracknell & Wokingham College, we want to encourage more employers to take on apprentices, especially in the new professional, office-based areas, like accountancy.”

Graham High, 17 from Woodley said: “I decided not to go to university after my A Levels because of the financial situation, but this way it’s the opposite – we’re getting paid and we won’t end up with the debt at the end!”

Alex Smith, 19 from Wokingham said: “I work every day and go to college for one afternoon and one evening every week. People don’t realise you can do in-office Apprenticeships, not just motor mechanics and hairdressing. I’m planning to carry on to a Higher Apprenticeship and then get my CIMA qualifications so I can be a fully-qualified accountant.”
