Colleges Week 2012

06 October 2014

Media students decided they were the best people to explain what being Work Ready means to other young people.

They worked with employers to create a DVD to get the message across about improving employability through focusing on skills like recognising value for money, teamwork, self-discipline, punctuality and effective communication.

Working on the DVD improved the students’ own work ready skills.

Student Connor Sharod-Southam a cameraman and editor found the project helped him with more than his media studies, “I found the experience really useful and it has made me much more prepared for the world of work. Asking employers to volunteer their time then briefing them on what we wanted them to do gave me skills I will use all the way through my working life.”

The ‘What is Work Ready’ DVD has been distributed to schools and will be seen by 1000s of school students in Bracknell and Wokingham thinking about their next move after GCSEs.  Local MPs and education and training ministers in government have also seen and been impressed by it.

Principal Campbell Christie CBE said “Our students put together an incredibly professional media product that really strikes a chord with other young people. They have shown that if you want to become work ready then you should get into college. I am hoping that this will be seen as a great way to get across the message about employability and will inspire other keen young college film crews to adapt the format for their own local version.”

The other film crew members were:

Hayden Barnes, Production Assistant; Lisa Stevens, Presenter; Chris Ferris, Music Composer.

The businesses who kindly featured in the DVD were:

Creotec Ltd; MOD Land and Air, CORDA; Bentalls Department Store; Bracknell Forest Homes; Pegasus Planning Group; Caring for Care Homes; Waitrose
