College helps to develop school workforce

06 October 2014

Bracknell & Wokingham College is helping to boost the Maths and English skills of playground supervisors, lunchtime controllers and support assistants from Oakfield First School in Windsor.

The school is encouraging their staff to achieve their Level 2 qualifications in Functional Skills Maths and English. At the end of each course, the students sit their Level 2 exams at the school. This causes the minimum of disruption to the school and the qualifications gained enable the school staff to move on to higher courses or to progress their careers.

The school is delighted with the outcome of these courses. Ann Smith, Senior Higher Level Teaching Assistant Team Leader, from the school said:

"Providing the opportunity for our staff to take part in this course is raising the self-esteem of each person. These are people who for one reason or another did not succeed the first time around themselves at school.

"As a school this will give us a workforce whose members are much more competent and confident in supporting children's learning in the classroom as well as giving each individual person a qualification which can be used as a springboard for future professional development."

Moira Gaw, an English and Maths tutor from Bracknell & Wokingham College, has been delivering the courses and said:

“The employees at Oakfield School have been very keen to learn and have demonstrated great commitment to the Functional Maths course.

“The teaching environment is very modern, the support from the school has been excellent and teaching in this committed and progressive environment has been very rewarding.

“The Functional Maths qualification will open many new doors for each individual and will give them the confidence to achieve their own personal goals.”

These courses are being funded by the government – to find out how your workplace could use this opportunity to develop their staff visit http://www.bracknell.ac.uk/ or call 01344 766268.
