College Art students help out local school

06 October 2014

College Art students recently helped out Wooden Hill Primaryl and Nursery School by painting a mural on the underpass near the school.

Children from the school designed the mural and originally this design was imprinted onto a plastic coating material and stuck to the underpass. Unfortunately after a few days this material began to peel off and so the school decided to ask for the help of the college Art department to paint the mural instead.

The college were more than happy to help as every year students from the majority of courses are encouraged to complete work out in their local community. Every year BTEC Art students complete a Community Art unit where they have to design and develop work to be used as part of a Community Art Service and the mural at Wooden Hill School will be used for this unit.

Art tutor Jan Allen who coordinated the college’s participation said:

“The school wanted the images to stay almost as the children had designed them with a little bit of refining. The students are each worked on a specific area but the images will still retain that child-like look.

Support for the project has come from the college who have provided paints, donations from parents at the school, help from Bracknell Forest Council and Bracknell Council, and also from the Highways Agency.”

Student Beth Higgs enjoyed working on the project:

“It was hard work, especially with the time restrictions, but in the end very worthwhile especially when the little nursery children came along and recognized all the different areas.”

Mary Temperton, Bracknell Town Councillor for Great Hollands North, who originally contacted the college to ask for help on the project said:

“This week your college art students have helped restore the faith of young art pupils at Wooden Hill School, Great Hollands. The original artists from Wooden Hill school came to thank them and marvel at their achievements.

I would like to thank the college and its students for enabling this to happen. Jan Allen is a wonder women and the work is very inspiring.”
