Air Marshal Ian Macfadyen visits college

06 October 2014

Air Marshal (AM) Ian Macfadyen, CB, OBE, FRAeS RAF Retd, the current Constable and Governor of Windsor Castle, paid a visit to Bracknell & Wokingham College on Thursday 11 October. He met with the Principal and students from our Uniformed Public Services (UPS) courses.

AM Macfadyen was welcomed by a Guard of Honour formed by UPS students from the college. He discussed these students’ future aspirations with them. He then attended a demonstration in the Sports Hall.

AM Macfadyen previously served a successful 39 years in the Royal Air Force (RAF).  During this time Campbell Christie, the college Principal, served under him in the first Gulf War.

Nigel Pumffrey, Senior UPS Lecturer for the college was very pleased that his students had the opportunity to meet AM Macfadyen:

“The whole visit went well.  AM Macfadyen was able to get a taste for some of the areas that we cover. The expeditions demonstration in the Sports Hall showed how our learners get experience for the outdoors and work on fitness and teambuilding. These are all areas the services look for in recruitment.

“The students were able experience how VIP visits are organised. One of the students was also able to have a conversation about her plans to join the Royal Air Force after completing the course.

“I was very proud of the way the students all performed in their duties. It showed an example of the high standards we see in our public service students.”

The UPS students were also grateful for this opportunity. Sam Caira, a second year said:

“I was very excited to meet Air Marshal Macfadyen as he has achieved many great goals throughout his career in the Royal Air Force”.
