Achiever Awards 2009

06 October 2014

Our fifth annual Achiever Awards, where we reward the people who have shown the greatest determination, courage and passion for their course, was hosted by TV's Matt Baker!

Matt said "It was wonderful to be part of the celebration; I had a chance to chat with all the award winners. The whole event set me up for Christmas!

"Once you realise what's possible with a bit of hard work and nouse you can apply it to your whole life, not just your college work. I think it's intelligent people who get the clever people to work for them!"

"I'm really happy but I don't know how I won!" said Ayla Bray, a Uniformed Public Services student, won the award for 'Making a positive contribution'.

Her tutor, Nigel Pumffrey, had a better idea. "Ayla's quite brilliant. She's always one of the first to volunteer for any extra activities involved with her course."

What next for Ayla? "I'm taking assessments to join the Special Constabulary, and waiting for a vacancy to join the police."

Listen to a short interview with Ayla at the awards.

Harry Fellowes, a winning Motor Vehicle student, said "it's been a really nice night, I feel very proud of myself.

"I'm studying to get the highest dealership I can for an Apprenticeship - I'll need some luck but if I work hard I'll make my own luck.

"I did the best I could and the hard work has paid off!" said Hair & beauty student Amelia Haddad. "I'm really excited.

"Now we're in the new salon, there's so much space; everything's well-organised, colourful and lovely!

"There's lots I'd like to do - I'd like to work with people with disabilities, or maybe in music. I can apply what I've learnt here to everything I want to do."

College Principal Howard O'Keeffe said "I'm impressed once again by the diversity of our Achievers. The common theme of all their stories is theirfantastic attitude; knowing that whatever their ability or difficulties, they can succeed through focus, teamwork and asking questions."
