Pauline Helliar-Symons

Pauline graduated from Swansea University with a BA (Hons) and MA in History, and a PGCE, after which she taught history in schools, spending 17 years as the deputy head of a local comprehensive school.  After a career change she became an assessor for the Investors in People award in the south of England.  She has been a member of Wokingham Borough Council for 35 years, and most recently has served as Chair of the Licensing Committee, Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Housing for four years, and Borough Mayor.  While Mayor her chosen charities were raising money to support carers of dementia patients, and the LINK project which befriends elderly people who live on their own.

Currently she is Chair of the Children’s Services Scrutiny Committee.  She is also Vice Chair of the Royal Berkshire Fire Authority.  For several years she has been a trustee of the Oakwood Young People’s Outdoor Pursuits centre in her Borough Council ward.  She also served on the Council of Reading University for six years.

She is a peer member for the Local Government Association, which involves mentoring and training councillors in other authorities, and undertaking peer reviews of other councils and fire services.  She became a member of the Corporation of Bracknell & Wokingham College in 2017, and serves on its Audit Committee.
