A parent's perspective
by Steph Davies, mother of Rob Davies
I had reservations about my son doing a BTEC Diploma in Media. I
had done A Levels myself and understood their
value, but Rob was very sure about his
choice, and I had to accept that a lot of things had changed since
my day!
He completed his
two-year course this summer and has achieved a
distinction and two merits,
giving him 280 UCAS points - the requirement for
the BA (Hons) Journalism course he is about to start at the
University of Portsmouth.
A bonus I hadn't realised when he began his course was that he'd
get his results before the summer term ended.
He could send them off, receive firm offers and have
confirmed places at universities before the A
Level results were even out.
The media diploma was a really good course and an
excellent route to university. I think vocational
courses are ideal if you know the field you want to work in,
putting your studies on the right track at the
earliest opportunity.
I was very pleased to see my son doing a course he enjoyed so
much. It provided a clear path towards a future in the
media and introduced him to a whole range of possibilities
available within that career.

A-Level Achiever Award 2010. Speaking after
the ceremony Connor's Mother Maisy said:
"I am really, really proud of
Scott tonight. It is so nice to come here this evening and
appreciate all of the hard work he has done. Connor
has always been happy at the College and he got on well
with the tutors and students from the start.
It has been great to meet some of the staff
who taught him tonight and Scott has got the University
place that he wanted so we are very pleased with
everything he has achieved with the College."

Award 2010. Speaking after the ceremony Francis's parents
said:
"We are very, very proud
parents this evening. It is a shame that the
Principal is leaving as we remember him being so encouraging at the
Open Event when we came to look around.
Francis has been looking
forward to receiving his award this evening and we have
really enjoyed hearing about all of the achievements of all of the
students."
