Students learn how to get to Oxbridge

Bracknell Forest schools and Colleges teamed up to help dispel myths about who can go to Oxbridge for their university education. Students from schools all over Bracknell came to a seminar hosted by Bracknell & Wokingham College.

22 A Level students from Bracknell & Wokingham College, Brakenhale, Easthampstead Park, Ranelagh Schools and Garth Hill College, attended a seminar and heard from Dr Joe Organ of Brasenose College, Oxford.

James White, 17 of Bracknell & Wokingham College studying Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry said:

“It was a useful seminar because it gave you practical experience of the sort of things they would test you on. It also made you question the way you think and the flaws in an argument. I’d always wanted to study at a high level but thought this was out of my reach – but it’s not the stereotypical environment you’d think. I would like to go to Cambridge as I think that is better for maths – it’s the best in the world.”Dr Joe Organ, Oxbridge with A Level students Arun Rai, James White

Arun Rai, 17, studying Maths, Further Maths and Physics at Bracknell & Wokingham College said:

“We talked about things to include in your personal statement and it was generally enlightening! It’s given me another reason to go – I am quite inspired now to get my As and A*s. We also found out today that finding the links between all the parts of your life – including study – is just as important as getting your grades.”

Dr Joe Organ who works for Brasenose College Oxford and represents Oxbridge in the Bracknell Forest area said:

“I was very impressed by those who attended – their interests, their thoughtfulness. A lot of what I do is break down the myths and misconceptions which abound about Oxbridge . There’s no such thing as a typical Oxbridge student, it is open to everybody. You just need an enquiring mind and to be passionate about your subject.

“I got the students involved in a brain exercise to get them thinking logically and critically. Oxbridge generally likes candidates who are enthusiastic and passionate about their subject. We want agile brains and intellectual curiosity.”

Bracknell & Wokingham College Careers Adviser, Karen Gallagher said:

“We were delighted to set up and host this event for schools and colleges in Bracknell Forest. Dr Joe Organ provided an invaluable insight into the Oxbridge college system, admissions process and the kinds of attributes they are looking for in applicants.”
