Boehringer Ingelheim case study

Boehringer Ingelheim Ltd is a leading pharmaceutical company based in Bracknell.

Whilst the company continues to run the UK business from its Bracknell offices, the decision was taken in 2007 to transfer its international manufacture of Unit Dose Vials to an overseas facility.

Clare Hepburn, Communications Officer said: "Due to production being transferred, we wanted to ensure our employees received support in learning a new skill or gaining a qualification in order to prepare for their future.

"The college helped organise a careers fair onsite which included a number of workshops for popular subjects like electrical installation, plumbing and teaching.

Courses tailored to our specific need were run both on site and at the college. The college has been very supportive in working with us within the educational structure and helpful in discussing our eligibility for funding.”

Paul Moodie, a Boehringer Ingelheim employee, is currently studying Electrical Installation with the college: "I am now well into the three-year course which has been converted to two years so we can complete it before the redundancies.

"The two nights a week course is going to be both at Bracknell & Wokingham College and onsite. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all those people that have worked hard to make it happen."

Clare said: "I would certainly encourage other businesses to work with their local college. I feel there is a great advantage in helping employees to underpin their skills with a qualification which is formally recognised. The training gives a win-win solution to both the individual and the business."
