Emma Courtney owns and
manages two salons in Martins Heron and
Warfield.
She has had four
apprentices over four years and will take on a new
apprentice this year.
Emma's apprentice, Charlene Brown, is a
Bracknell & Wokingham College student doing her Hairdressing
Apprenticeship. Charlene has only recently started but has
already done Emma’s highlights!
Emma says: “I think others should take on an
apprentice because the customers like their
enthusiasm and like to see youngsters keen
to learn. I enjoy training them and I love to see
them doing well.
“I had one apprentice who found the studies a
bit tricky but we supported her all the way through and she
persevered. She is now qualified and works
as a stylist in one of my salons. She is a
good stylist, and I am particularly proud of
her achievements.
“It's important for me to have apprentices who
are motivated and really know what they want to do
and where they want to go.
“I ask my apprentices to keep a diary of
everything they have done and learnt, and even ask them to record
how they are feeling. This helps me to ensure they get a
really good mix of activities and are being fully
trained. The apprentices take this diary into
college too.
“At Cutting it Fine we all muck
in and this means we have real respect for each
other. We have such a good atmosphere here and really help
and support each other.”
“Bracknell & Wokingham College has been
really good to work with and I have enjoyed
studying there myself.
"They really want people to qualify and make
time for their students on a one-to-one
basis. Nobody gets neglected and everyone has a good start in
their careers. The facilities are brilliant.”
