The UK Department for Education (DfE) and Ofqual have confirmed that there will be reforms to GCSE and A Level qualifications in the UK and internationally.

This means that new specifications for GCSE and A Level qualifications in some subjects will be introduced from September 2015.

We’ll talk you through the changes at Open Events and during your interview.

AS Levels

AS Level Reform

  • AS will be a standalone qualification taught from September 2015
  • Apart from Art and Design, AS qualifications will be exam only
  • New AS qualifications will be designed to offer breadth to the curriculum and will broadly remain at their current standard

Course content

You may choose to study three or four subjects.
Many combinations are possible and AS Levels can be combined with some GCSEs or vocational courses such as Performing Arts or Media.

Entry requirements

Because AS Levels are exam-based qualifications, five relevant, exam-based GCSEs are required at grades A*- C, including English Language and Maths where appropriate.
Although vocational qualifications and coursework based GCSEs may be useful for specific subjects, they would normally be taken into account only once the basic entry requirements have been met.
You will need additional, specific GCSE grades for many of the subjects, please see full listing below.

Progression

Further A Level study, another Level 3 vocational course or directly into employment.

A Level Fast Track

A Level reform

Due to the forthcoming reform to A Levels, Fast Track options will be limited in 2015 and again in 2016. This is because as subjects change to the new structure, there will be no full A Level exams available from the exam boards until the second year of each subject. Come and discuss this with us during open days and interviews

Course content

The course is for those who need a ‘fast track’ to A Levels, particularly where you have successfully studied A Levels before and wish to study new subjects. You simply attend all the classes in one year.
The course will be an individually designed programme of two or three A2 Levels. It may also include GCSE subjects. Many combinations are possible. Advice about subjects will be given at interview. This is not suitable for school leavers or for students who have previously failed an AS year.

Entry requirements

Evidence of relevant prior study or previous successful AS/A2 level qualifications plus five relevant, exam-based GCSEs at grades A*- C.
