19+ Bursary Guidance

Bracknell and Wokingham College is able to provide bursary financial support to students from funds awarded to the College from the Education Funding Agency or the Skills funding agency via Capita for this purpose.

Key Principles

  • Bursary Financial Support is provided to support learners with a specific financial need that could prevent them from participating in learning.

  • Funding is focused on individuals who are financially disadvantaged.

  • The budget for Bursary Support is finite; learners who are eligible for support are not automatically entitled to it.

Areas of financial support that may be available if the total household income is below £21,000

  • Travel if using public transport and if you live more than 3 miles walking distance from College up to a maximum of £1000 per academic year.

  • Meal vouchers for days with at least 5hrs of timetabled lessons.

  • Books, equipment and clothing where it is a requirement for the course.

  • UK Trips – at the discretion of student services dependant on available funding.

  • 25% remission/reimbursement of tuition fees.

  • Exam costs (only if the exam cost is not included as part of the tuition fee – up to a maximum of £50).

  • Childcare. If you are 20 or older you can apply for childcare support at up to £20.00 per day per family. Student Services will contact you to discuss details. If you are 19 you must apply for care to Learn and should speak to a member of the Student Services team for more Information.

Other Areas of financial support

These are up to the discretion of student services and will be based on individual circumstances.

Free Meals

Students whose household income is below £16,190 and have an EHCP are entitled to free meals (via meal vouchers) for days with at least 5hrs of timetabled lessons (you will still need to fill in a bursary form).

Areas of financial support that may be available if the total household income is between £21,000 and £31,000

  • Travel if using public transport and if you live more than 3 miles walking distance from College up to a maximum of £800 per academic year.

Eligibility Criteria

  • You are aged 19 or over on 31 August 2017 and are studying a Level 1 or 2 course.

  • You are aged 19 -23 on 31 August 2017 and are studying a Level 3 or 4 course.

  • You are ordinarily resident in the UK and the College’s Admissions Team have categorised you as a ‘Home fee payer’.

  • You have been accepted onto and are studying a programme of Adult Skills learner provision. This currently includes full-time A Level/BTEC/ESOL and Access to Higher Education courses that are funded by the Education Funding Agency or the Skills funding agency.

Application process

  • An application form is available to collect from Student Services or it is available to download from the College’s website.

  • Eligibility is based on financial need and so those applying will be means tested and required to provide accurate data about their household income.

  • Forms must be submitted to Student Services along with all required evidence.

  • A decision about eligibility can be made prior to enrolment but funds cannot be released until the student enrols.

  • Students will be notified in writing by letter about the outcome of their application.

  • Student Services will aim to respond to applications within 15 days however during the busy period at the start of the autumn term this may not be possible.

Please note

  • These awards are at the College’s discretion and are not an entitlement.

  • The total amount of support will be capped at £3,000 per learner.

  • Funds are limited and applications will be considered strictly in the order in which they are received by Student Services. No more applications can be considered once the whole fund is allocated.

  • Applications received after the advertised closing date will be placed on a waiting list.
