Icing on the cake
Maidenhead’s Drew McLellan was the have-a-go
hero when he found himself cast as official photographer
for friends Simon Willison and Natalie Downe’s
wedding, 2 days before the event after only a
1-day wedding photography course.
Web developer Drew, 30,
took pictures throughout the wedding ceremony as well as
formal group shots and informal
portraits at the reception at Roedean School,
Brighton.
He said:
“Natalie’s photographer had been
hospitalised and at such short notice she couldn’t
find a replacement. I enjoy photography but never thought I’d have
the responsibility of shooting a wedding.
“Thank goodness for my
course. I dug out my day’s notes, and pored over the photos I'd
taken with the models.
“The course taught me lots about dealing
with people on the day, coping with the schedule and the kinds of
shots expected from me. It really did make the
difference in knowing what to expect.”
With photographers often
booked years in advance and costing thousands, the
hobbyist’s efforts were the ultimate wedding
gift.
“I had no opportunity to visit the venue
beforehand, but all went well with no major disasters!
“They're not perfect, but as a novice
stepping in at the last moment, I'm pleased that I've done a fair
job. After this experience I'd definitely consider
doing it again.”
Teresa Hamilton, Photography Course
Manager, said:
“I was delighted to hear that one of our
students had managed to put their learning to such good
use. On our wedding course we actually go to a local
church with a ‘bride and groom’ and take photographs as if it was a
real wedding.
“I thought Drew did a great job with such
little notice – it proves how much a
little learning can help”.
