Being a governor

Lynda Holdway
In 2009, my daughter came home from BWC where
she studied two very different subjects over a two year term, and
announced that there was a vacancy for a Parent Governor and she
felt I should apply as I’d always liked to be involved in her
education and the local community and, through my full-time work, I
had already supported the college to some extent. I was a
little apprehensive, wondering what might be expected of me
in a sector that I knew nothing about. I was also
concerned about the level of commitment I would need to give being
as I have a full-time European remit in my daily working life.
My fears were unfounded; we always receive
plenty of notice for meetings, of which there are not too many,
along with a full package of information. My first
visit to the College following my appointment was a little daunting
but I felt immediately welcome by my fellow Governors. We all
come from different backgrounds and can offer a wealth of
experience and support to the College as well as each
other.
I became a full member of the Corporation prior to the end of my
term as Parent Governor as I quickly identified that one year was
not enough, I relished the opportunity of being on board for the
minimum four years. My experience to date has been extremely
interesting and stimulating as I continue to learn about the
workings of an educational establishment and the real impact of
local and national changes. By being part of something so
valuable to our students, college corporation members are
able to have a positive impact on their future as well as our own,
something I personally find hugely rewarding.
