College policies
Equal opportunities
In 2010 the government introduced a new
Equality Act. This Act requires organisations, such as
Bracknell and Wokingham College, to:
- Eliminate
unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other
conduct prohibited by the Act.
- Advance
equality of opportunity between people who share a protected
characteristic and those who do not.
- Foster good
relations between people who share a protected
characteristic and those who do not.
What are the ‘protected
characteristics’?
These are age, disability, gender
reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief,
sex and sexual orientation.
This prompted the College to review the
different policies we had in place regarding equality and diversity
and create one Single Equality Scheme.
Bracknell and Wokingham College is committed to
challenging and combating discrimination against any individual or
group of individuals. Our Equality and Diversity policy statement
confirms our commitment to providing equal opportunities for all
members of the College.
The learning environment that we create gives each person
an equal opportunity to progress and improve. All staff and
students are expected to contribute to the success of the
environment. Read about how students create their own Respect
agenda.
The 2010 Equality Act places an ‘Equality Duty’ on all
public sector organisations. Read about how this impacts on
our College: Public Sector Equality
Duty.
The College has a pro-active Equality and
Diversity Committee which meets every half term and is tasked with
the responsibility of ensuring that the ‘equality duty’ is
achieved.
The Committee is responsible for setting and
reviewing Equality and
Diversity Objectives.
