A parent's perspective

by Steph Davies, mother of Rob Davies

I had reservations about my son doing a BTEC Diploma in Media. I had done A Levels myself and understood their value, but Rob was very sure about his choice, and I had to accept that a lot of things had changed since my day!

Rob Davies, past media student, with his mother StephHe completed his two-year course this summer and has achieved a distinction and two merits, giving him 280 UCAS points - the requirement for the BA (Hons) Journalism course he is about to start at the University of Portsmouth.

A bonus I hadn't realised when he began his course was that he'd get his results before the summer term ended.

He could send them off, receive firm offers and have confirmed places at universities before the A Level results were even out.

The media diploma was a really good course and an excellent route to university. I think vocational courses are ideal if you know the field you want to work in, putting your studies on the right track at the earliest opportunity.

I was very pleased to see my son doing a course he enjoyed so much. It provided a clear path towards a future in the media and introduced him to a whole range of possibilities available within that career.
